  * best generic food: black oil sunflower seeds
  * birds are attracted to the sound of dripping water
  * if you can incorporate a bird bath with the feeder it's even better
  * critical to keep the feeder filled all the time
  * any height OK
  * give the birds areas near the feeder where they can fly in and look around for a while (to confirm it's safe)
  * bird houses can help --- best would be wren ot chicageee boxes with small holes
